UK Replaces Physical Visa Stickers with e-Visas for Nigerians

The United Kingdom has announced that Nigerian nationals applying for UK visit visas will begin receiving electronic visas (e-Visas) from 25 February 2026, replacing the traditional physical visa stickers placed in passports.

The announcement was made by the British High Commission, as part of the UK government’s wider move toward a fully digital immigration and border system.

Under the new arrangement, approved visas will be issued as a secure digital record of a traveller’s immigration status. Applicants will be able to access their e-Visa online through a UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) account.

Application Process Remains the Same

Authorities confirmed that the existing visa application process will not change. Applicants will still be required to:

  • Complete the online visa application form
  • Visit a visa application centre to submit biometric information

The only change is the format in which the visa is issued, shifting from physical stickers to a digital system.

Improved Security and Efficiency

The British High Commission described the introduction of e-Visas as a practical step toward modernising travel documentation for Nigerian applicants. The digital system is expected to strengthen immigration controls while reducing the administrative burden associated with paper-based visas.

Officials explained that the shift will support quicker verification of travel status and provide a more streamlined experience for individuals travelling to the United Kingdom for tourism, study, or work.

Existing Visas Remain Valid

Nigerian travellers who currently hold valid physical visa stickers have been assured that their visas will remain valid until their expiration dates. There is no requirement to replace an existing visa solely because of the new policy.

After visa approval, applicants will be required to create a free UKVI online account to access and manage their e-Visa before travelling. The e-Visa will serve as official proof of immigration status when entering the UK.

The introduction of e-Visas for Nigerian travellers reflects the UK government’s ongoing efforts to modernise its immigration system and align travel documentation with digital border management practices.

Final Thought

For Nigerian travellers, the shift to e-Visas represents a practical move toward faster, more secure travel documentation without changing existing application requirements. While applicants will need to familiarise themselves with managing their visa status online, the transition is expected to reduce paperwork, minimise delays, and align UK travel procedures with global digital border standards. As the rollout begins, travellers are advised to ensure their online visa accounts are properly set up ahead of travel to avoid last-minute complications.
