Canada’s New Proof of Funds Requirement
The Canadian Government, through Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), has increased the minimum proof of funds for applicants under the Express Entry system.
Effective July 7, 2025, the new rates now require:
Single applicants to show proof of at least CAD 15,263 (approx. ₦17 million
Two-person households must show CAD 19,001 (approx. ₦21.2 million)
Applicants who already have a profile in the system are expected to update their proof of funds no later than July 28, 2025, to remain eligible.
What Is Proof of Funds?
Proof of funds is evidence that an applicant has the financial resources to settle in Canada. It may include:
Recent bank statements
Official letters from financial institutions
Employer letters or scholarship funding (where applicable)
Note: Real estate equity or borrowed funds are not accepted.
If your spouse is accompanying you, joint accounts are acceptable, or accounts solely in your spouse’s name if you can legally show access.
🇺🇸 U.S. Visa Policy Tightens for Nigerians
Just a day after Canada’s announcement, the United States Mission in Nigeria declared that most non-immigrant visas for Nigerians will now be:
Single-entry only
Valid for just three (3) months
This new policy, which took effect July 8, 2025, is said to be a reciprocal measure in response to Nigeria’s visa policy for Americans
