UK Raises English Test Requirements for Work and Family Visas

The UK has tightened its immigration rules, raising English language standards for migrants seeking work, settlement, or family visas. Skilled worker visa applicants now need B2 proficiency, up from B1. Family visa applicants must demonstrate English skills at entry, progressing from A1 to B2 for settlement.

The Home Office said the new framework is part of efforts to reset the immigration system and ensure stronger integration.

“We are resetting the immigration system. More rigorous English language rules for new migrants will ensure they fully integrate and contribute to British life and the economy,” the Home Office stated.

Officials argue that stronger English skills will improve productivity at work, help migrants participate in local communities, and reduce barriers to integration.

Key Changes to Visa Rules

  • Skilled Worker Visas: Applicants must achieve B2 proficiency, up from B1. This means they must demonstrate the ability to handle workplace meetings, detailed emails, and complex conversations, rather than only everyday communication.
  • Family and Dependent Visas: Adult spouses, partners, and other adult dependents must show English skills at the entry stage for the first time. The progression is set in stages:
    • A1 English required to enter the UK.
    • A2 English needed to extend a family visa.
    • B2 English required for settlement or Indefinite Leave to Remain.

For settlement, applicants must meet the B2 standard, bringing long-term residency rules in line with skilled worker visas.

What Applicants Need to Do

  • Prepare early for Home Office-approved English tests at the required level.
  • Ensure visa documentation reflects the new requirements.
  • Families and professionals planning to move should build English training into their migration plans.

These changes apply to new applications and will shape how both skilled workers and families plan their long-term move to the UK.

Final Thoughts

The UK’s decision to raise English test requirements marks a major shift in its immigration landscape. For skilled workers and families alike, stronger language skills are now central to securing visas, extending stays, and settling permanently. While these reforms aim to boost integration and economic contribution, they also mean that future applicants must prepare earlier and invest more in meeting the new standards.

For migrants planning a move, understanding these rules and taking steps to meet them will be the key to a smooth transition into life in the UK.
